If It Hadn't Been for You
We stayed out late at night: back then;
In the warmer months of the season.
We would go down to the lake; for fun.
If it hadn't been for you:
We took along some music to listen to,
We would go out on the pier,
We were looking up into the sky;
At the moon, ahh–yeah, uhuh.
If it hadn't been;
When our eyes caught each other,
As I looked into her eyes;
Those intoxicating green eyes, she had.
If it hadn't been for her:
As you looked right past our stare;
When you wanted to go;
Filtering through my deep soul.
But, I realized I had to make you see;
Just how deep down you mean to me;
And, with my guard let down;
For a love that I thought would last, it did.
You have gotten past my wall:
Somehow;
I wanted and needed; more of you, uhuh.
I need you to have it all, with you;
You're my sugar, my honeydew–oh yeah.
I needed you to see,
Now that you've had the chance to see;
It all was true; it has to be;
It's always been about you, my only you;
My best friend\, my baby; uhuh.
I just wanted her to see;
But that was so many years ago;
It might even be a blur to me,
If it hadn't been: for her, you see.
But, if it hadn't been for her;
Coming by to check on me, too, see,
That I was still this mess inside–oh yeah!
And if it hadn't been:
Then she walked across the room:
I find myself still yearning; for more of you.
Thoughts of us; rushed through my mind.
If it hadn't been for her:
My baby, such a good time;
We had over the years–oh yeah, uhuh.
But I'm still lost without you, babe.
Now, I find myself blue,
Without you,
I sure do miss you.
These tears; want to—fall.
R.I.P., Shannon, I love you!
